Sarah Fay Pinkenson Freedman

Sarah Fay Pinkenson Freedman, age 85, of Houston, Texas passed away on Jan 5, 2020.

Sarah was born to Paul and Crusea Pinkenson on November 13, 1934 in New York City. She was one of three daughters. Following her 6th birthday, the family moved to Houston, the city she called home. Sarah married Norman Rosenberg in 1954, and together they raised two children, Paul and Wendy, z’l. She also raised her son, Jason Chancellor, from another marriage. Sarah married Harold Freedman in 1992 and they were together until Harold’s death in 2015.

She is survived by her children: Paul Rosenberg and Jason Chancellor, sister, Fredel Deutser; and step-children Cantor Cindy Freedman and Gary Freedman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman Rosenberg; her daughter, Wendy Rosenberg Kent; sister, Raya Meyerson; and step-son Robert Freedman.

At a young age, Sarah lived for a time in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her Aunt Natalia who owned Albuquerque’s first ballet studio and Sarah excelled as a ballerina. After moving back to Houston, she worked for many years at her parent’s retail store, Penn’s Ladies Apparel, and later worked for many years as a manager at Walter Pye’s. Everyone that encountered Sarah realized how exceptional she was. She was an extremely hard worker and she was known for her generosity with family, friends, and even complete strangers.  During her employment at Walter Pye’s many patrons befriended Sarah and would always ask for her by her nickname ‘Pinky’. Some of these patrons and co-workers became the best of friends with Sarah.

During the many years Sarah and Harold were together they enjoyed traveling, dining out, and being in each other’s company. They took turns caring for each other, each in their own special way. Sarah focused on the health of her loved ones, being fastidious that her family was covered with medical insurance and reminding everyone to be diligent with preventive health care. With a special needs child of her own, Sarah was particularly generous with charities, especially those involving disadvantaged children.

A graveside service will take place Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 2:15 p.m. at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery, 1037 Post Oak Rd, Houston, Texas, 77055. Cantor Cindy Freedman will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.
