Stuart Toledano

Stuart Toledano, 80, died Monday, April 20, 2020, at his home in Houston, TX.Stuart was born in New York City on April 12, 1940, to the late Jacob Toledano and late Helen Weiss Toledano.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Carole Ann Weinstein Toledano and by a brother, Richard Toledano.Surviving are his three children: Alicia Shekter (Lee Shekter), Rachel Toledano-Smith (Lane H. Smith) and Kevin Toledano (Andrea Ortega Toledano); two brothers: Harve and Mike Toledano; and six grandchildren who greatly enjoyed spending time with their Papoo: Jacob Shekter, Garrett Smith, Dylan Shekter, Samuel Toledano, Eric Shekter and Ana Sofia Toledano.Stuart attended the Bronx High School of Science and New York University. He met his wife, Carole, when they worked together in New York City. They married in 1962 and moved to Baton Rouge, LA where Stuart earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Louisiana State University in 1964.Stuart worked for the Naval Weapons Laboratory in Virginia before joining IBM in 1966 and returning to New York State. While at IBM, Stuart was involved in developing one of the first computer text editors and the first personal computer. His last position before retirement was in the area of intellectual property. After retirement he kept current with the world of computers and was always happy to talk about technology.A dedicated member of Temple Beth Shalom in Mahopac, NY, Stuart helped with fundraising and searches for clergy, and attended a daily morning minyan in Peekskill, NY, until moving to Houston, TX in 2010. In Houston, Stuart was involved with Chabad of West Houston, Hebrew Order of David, and was an active member of Temple Sinai. Stuart’s studies of Jewish literature included the Torah and the Daf Yomi seven-year Talmud study cycle.Stuart had a zest for life and loved to travel. He and Carole traveled extensively in Europe, to St. Petersburg (Russia), and as far as Australia. After Carole’s passing Stuart continued traveling, to Israel, Great Britain, Europe (Western and Eastern), Asia, South and Central America, and Africa. Among other adventures Stuart enjoyed ziplining in Costa Rica, climbing to the top of Machu Picchu in Peru and got used to lemurs climbing on him in Madagascar.Stuart regularly visited his brothers and other relatives. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, and took great joy in visiting with them for holidays, graduations, births, Bar Mitzvahs, and other celebrations. To see Stuart smile brought a smile to your face, and to hear him laugh brought happiness.
